I suck.

April 18th, 2008

So I think it’s pretty evident by now, especially to anyone that knows me really well, that I suck at blogging. I’ve never been able to keep any sort of paper journal, my LiveJournal is chronically lapsed, and this blog is… well, you can see it for yourself.

I don’t really know what the problem is, but I have some guesses: I get busy … I don’t know what to post about … I forget to do it…. It’s just not a habit I’ve ever been able to develop for myself, as useful as it would be.
Still. I press on. Although to be honest, I’m only posting this while procrastinating some “real” work I should be doing.
I started thinking about why I suck at blogging while reading this: What Is the Big Deal About Blogging Anyway?

And while I get what they are saying, it seems pretty clear to me that there’s something that these blogger’s don’t get. Something that has to do with that fact that bloggers are the only ones excited about blogging. There’s some sort of feedback loop that sometimes happens (didn’t happen to me, clearly) when you start blogging that makes those doing it want to do it more.
I don’t know the statistics for how many people are blogging vs. not-blogging, or how many people even read blogs or know what they are. I do suspect, however, that bloggers are the only ones reading blogs, that the relationships they are building are all rather incestuous, for lack of a better word, and that they are in their own little world.

Meanwhile they talk about blogging as if bloggers invented relationships. “You need to blog so you can have relationships.” I have relationships now, thank you. And I have trouble keeping up with some of them, too. “If you blog, people you’ve never met will be able to know who you are as a person.” I’ve had some experience with that, actually, and I found it very disconcerting. Anyway, that’s nothing to do with blogging, that’s a function of the internet.

Anyway.

I am not saying that blogging is bad, or even that the blog-pushers are wrong. I just have this perception that they believe blogging is for everyone, and it’s not.

From the blogs I have read I’ve found that blogging is different for everyone. For some its like sitting down with a cup of coffee and talking about your day/week/month/year to a friend/stranger/waiter. You take that moment and open a doorway to your thoughts, let others in on what has been rolling around in your head. What inspired you that day, something strange you saw, or little things like a design that caught your eye. For others its their big break, a chance to sit up on that soap box and tell it all to the world. Unabashed ranting/opinions/directions that lay out their very deep dark thoughts on subjects that in everyday conversation they never get a real chance to vent. Who ever said there were rules or requirements to blogging is crazy. Blogging is about laying it all out there, opening up the top of your head and letting it spill out on the keyboard. Everyone has something to say, through words, art and music. Just find your voice and your fingers will do the rest.
